BEBAT Battery Collection Program

BEBAT (for BElgian BATteries) is a Belgian organization that collects, sorts and recycles used batteries and educates consumers about why they should not throw batteries and their harmful chemicals in the garbage. As collection numbers declined and consumer awareness stagnated in recent years, the agency was asked to change that by creating a dynamic, young and environmentally-friendly image for BEBAT. The agency likened the recycling of battery materials (cadmium, mercury, lead, zinc, nickel) into other industrial products to the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly and developed messages for a whole range of media and other programs. This creative concept has resulted in much greater consumer awareness, the collection of more batteries and fewer people throwing batteries in the garbage.
